Tan Chai’s journey from a passionate student filmmaker to an award-winning editor is a testament to discipline, vision, and heartfelt storytelling. Born with a fascination for visual media, Tan began his formal training at RMIT University in Australia, earning a bachelor’s degree in communication (Media). But it was in Chicago—at DePaul University—where his cinematic voice sharpened, earning a master’s degree in Cinema Production. These dual foundations provided both global perspective and technical expertise, preparing him for the demanding pace of the film and advertising industries.
Tan’s career began with promise. While still a student, he directed and produced a short film titled Grow Up, showcasing early on his ability to manage narrative structure, character dynamics, and visual tone. What distinguished him even in these formative years was his intrinsic sense for emotional rhythm—a quality that would define his editorial style in years to come.

Since officially entering the industry in 2019, Tan has brought his editing acumen to a wide array of projects, from commercials to narrative shorts and documentaries. One of his most celebrated contributions came with the commercial BrightMinds, directed by Yang Liu and produced by Tye Liu. This visually captivating and emotionally resonant campaign went on to participate in an astounding 20 domestic and international awards, its achievements include multiple wins, nominations, and official selections, transforming it from a simple brand message into a cinematic experience.
But Tan’s talents don’t end with advertisements. Prior to BrightMinds, he participated in the editing of several narrative shorts and documentaries as an editor, including A Matter of Time, The Thirty-Three Stories, The Foreigner’s New Adobe, and the re-edited version of Bobby and Tiffany, which received critical acclaim and awards at prestigious festivals, including the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival — Remi Awards and the Chinese American Film Festival – Golden Angel Awards. These films often explore themes of identity, memory, and cross-cultural nuance—topics that resonate deeply with Tan’s international background and artistic sensibilities.
Directors and producers alike praise his professionalism, meticulous attention to detail, and emotional intelligence. For many, working with Tan means collaborating with an artist who not only understands the technical demands of post-production but also the emotional truth within every frame. His editing choices are always in service of the story, enhancing tone, performance, and pacing with subtle precision.
Looking ahead, Tan continues to expand his creative reach. He has signed on as editor for Bartender Knows, an upcoming thriller by Tye Liu, and is also contracted to edit the three-part film series Pet Romance. As part of early-stage discussions, he was introduced to the project’s general storyline, which tells deeply personal stories about pet-human connections in a post-pandemic world. He is also contracted to edit The Walk In, a children’s supernatural short directed by Peter Valentino, and has been briefed on the intended tone, which blends thriller and heartfelt family drama.
Whether editing commercials that move millions or films that win juries, Tan Chai remains steadfast in his goal: to honor the director’s vision and elevate storytelling through the unseen art of editing. His evolution from student filmmaker to trusted collaborator in the global film community shows a creative journey not only realized—but just beginning.
