In recognition of Irene Gandy’s outstanding contributions to the theatrical world, The Drama League has officially renamed its program for emerging directors. The Drama League’s Artistic Director, Gabriel Stelian-Shanks, Executive Director, Bevin Ross, and Board President Bonnie Comley announced this renaming at a celebration at The Museum of Broadway. Irene Gandy, a distinguished press agent and Tony-winning producer honored with the 2020 Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre, now lends her name to The Drama League Irene Gandy Directing Assistantships program.
This revamped program is dedicated to partnering with BIPOC/Global Majority stage directors to offer assistant directing opportunities on their productions to early-career individuals from BIPOC/Global Majority and historically marginalized backgrounds. The Assistantships initiative spans nationally, collaborating with theaters and participants nationwide, including renowned establishments like Manhattan Theatre Club, Trinity Rep, Seattle Rep, and many others.
Drama League Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks commended Irene’s invaluable contributions: “Irene literally crafted a path in our industry when there was no path.” Irene’s commitment to mentoring and educating emerging talents aligns seamlessly with the Assistantships’ mission to provide hands-on experience and knowledge alongside respected directors nationwide, thus shaping the future of theatrical leadership.
The next cohort of Irene Gandy Assistantships is set to be unveiled at the Drama League Awards on May 17, 2024, at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. Part of The Directors Project, the Irene Gandy Directing Assistantships program exemplifies The Drama League’s dedication to fostering career development opportunities for early- and mid-career directors.
