Application downloaded to a phone that enables the user to browse and purchase content. |
| Carrier |
Company who provides mobile phone service:T-mobile, Vodafone, Telus etc. |
| Custom CD |
Consumers can select tracks, then have their selection burned to a cd and deliverd via the mail. |
| DRM |
Digital Rights Management - allows users specific rights to play music, burn to cd, or download to a personal device. Generally meant to stop users from file sharing content. Apple uses AAC, Windows Media is WMA, Sony is ATRAC. |
| Internet Retail |
Retailer whose product is primarily for a desktop computer or who primarily delivers content to a peripheral device through the computer. |
| JukeBox |
Users select a song to play over a speaker system in a public place, there is no transfer of music to a device or burned to a CD. |
| Kiosk |
Terminal placed in a public setting that allows customers to purchase music, then upload to a mobile device or burn a CD. |
| Mobile Retail |
Retailer whose products are mainly for the mobile phone and who primarily deliver products through a carrier. |
| OTA |
Over The Air - delivering a full track download via a wireless connection through a mobile phone operator (ie not through Wi Fi). |
| PSMS |
Premium SMS - a method to charge for content via a text message that bills a preset amount to a users cell phone bill. |
| Short Code |
Usually a 5 digit number that users send in a text message to in order to receive content, or to receive back a text message with information. |
| Streaming |
Paying a recurring monthly fee for unlimited acces to the entire library of a service. However, if the user does not continue to pay the monthly fee, they can no longer access any music files downloaded or streamed. |
| Subscription |
Paying a recurring monthly fee for a limited number of downloads which are then owned. For example, users who pay $9.99 per month are permitted to download up to 30 MP3's which they own even if they cancel their subscription. |
| Vanity Keywords |
An easy to remember word that a user sends in a text message to receive a specific piece of content. Usually used in conjunction with a short code ie send INgrooves to 22646 to access our WAP site. |
| WAP |
An internet page specifically designed for mobile phones. Usually WAP sites detect what type of phone and what carrier it is on. |
| White Label Service |
Services that provide the licensing and infrastructure to a business to consumer interface. |
| Wi Fi |
Wireless internet. |
